Borderline Personality Disorder- What Is it?

Borderline Personality Disorder also known as BPD is one of them most controversial disorders in psychology today. Borderline Personality Disorder is characterized by depth and variability of moods. This disorder makes it difficult for a person to control their habits, their image of themselves are distorted and they feel worthless. While they yearn to have close relationships with others their mood swings can push them away.

Research is increasing the awareness of it and helping to improve treatment and understanding of the disease. Real life experiences have shown that people with borderline personality disorder can get better and lead happy and successful lives.

Symptoms

When you have Borderline Personality Disorder you often have an insecure sense of yourself. Sometimes the way you feel about yourself changes from day to day. Sometimes you may feel like you’re a bad person or you may even feel like you don’t exist at all. This can lead to changes in your friends, goals, and gender identity.

Most of your relationships are unstable. You often find yourself in a love and hate type of relationship. You may be cool someone one day and then the next you shift your view of them, sometimes over minor misunderstandings. In the eyes of a person suffering from BPD a person can either be good or evil they can't be both. So one day a person may good to you and the next they may be evil.

More Signs of BPD:

Risky behavior.Risky behavior can include reckless driving, drinking and drive and unsafe sex. It can also include taking drugs and gambling.

Periods of short but intense episodes of depression or even anxiety.

Suicidal thoughts and behavior.

Trouble controlling your feeling or emotions and impulses.

Fear of being alone

Unjustified and inappropriate anger that may even lead to physical confrontation

Causes

Although exact reasons of why a person may have borderline personality disorder has not yet been defined possible causes are:

Brain deformity. Some research has shown that certain chemicals that are suppose to be secreted in the brain such as serotonin may not be functioning properly.

Surroundings. A person with BPD may have grown up in abusive household , they may have been neglected or separated from loved ones.

Genetics. A few studies of families and twins have shown that there is a possibility that personality disorders can be hereditary.

If you feel that you may have BPD it's important too see an doctor immediately. If not treated and helped the personality disorder can get worse and the risk factors can be deadly.
