An overview on Dementia
Dementia is a mental disorder commonly cited among old age people resulting in loss of memory, inability to execute day to day activities. In the last stage of a human’s life, the old age period tends to develop emotional as well as physical constrains. Physical constrains is likely to happen due to deteriorating energy in the body level and the reduction of mobility. Due to these physical states, one develops psychic disorders. One such disorder is Dementia.
Symptoms
Dementia will result in loss of memory and inability to perform day to day activities. For instance:
- Getting lost in a known neighborhood.
- Inability to identify close associates and relatives.
- Forgetting the track of a conversation.
- Inability to communicate effectively with fellows.
Dementia can be classified as
Primary Dementia
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most common type of Dementia which is caused due to damage or loss of brain cells due to protein deposits in the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is typically hereditary. There is no cure for this disease although there have been some medications in recent times said to cure it.
Secondary Dementia
Secondary Dementia refers to dementia which is an impact of a physical injury or physical disease like (vascular disease, Parkinson disease etc.).
Pseudo-Dementia
Pseudo-Dementia is typically referred to a condition which imitates the symptoms of Dementia but is not a real Dementia.
Treatment for Dementia
Treatment for Dementia remains with care-taker of the sufferer. As the sufferer mostly might be an elderly person decline of health is unavoidable. A proper nursing or a constant supervision by family members and friends would be a moral support to the patient. In terms of medical treatment if the cause of dementia (physical disorder) is identified, the doctor may prescribe proper treatment for the associated physical disorder which may be an eventual cure for dementia.
